Go eco-friendly, say D-Towners on World Earth Day

Like every year, as we celebrate World Earth Day today, it’s time to remember that we need to respect nature and protect our environment. After all, we are not alone and it is our duty to conserve the awe-inspiring biodiversity, which makes our planet so unique and beautiful to live in.
In our digitally driven lives, we hardly get time to enjoy the natural beauty around us and often use this as an excuse for not doing anything concrete for our environment. However, it is heartening to see that some of our celebs are silently doing their bit in this regard. While some of them have created little green spaces in their houses where natural beauty can breed and blossom, others are contributing towards the cause by adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle. And one doesn’t need to look too far for inspiration. Who can ever forget the contribution of Bapalal Modi, the man behind Ahmedabad’s chabutras? Legend has it that he was all set to sell off his shop and his wife’s jewellery to construct a chabutra for birds, who could take refuge and feed during summer. This inspiring story is testimony to the deeply ingrained traditional practice of working towards the welfare of all life forms in the city.

This year, the theme for World Earth Day celebrations is ‘protect our species’. And D-Towners feel that while not everyone can make a global impact, a lot can be done in our daily lives as individuals. Creating green spaces (balcony gardens and terrace gardens etc) around us is one sure way of making a difference. “This cause is really close to my heart and I am extremely active when it comes to doing my bit for the environment and animals around me,” says actor Raunaq Kamdar. He adds, “We have consciously created eco-friendly surroundings at our home. From having a terrace garden to solar panels installed, we make sure to utilize our resources carefully. We also have bamboo grills in all our windows, where we grow creepers. So, a lot of birds, butterflies, squirrels, monkeys and peacocks come to our house every day. This is my way of providing friendly spaces for animals around us.”

Similarly, many D-Town actors are working towards creating eco-friendly zones within their neighbourhood. Actress Vidhi Parikh, who loves gardening, has created a small garden at her house. She says that it gives her immense satisfaction to see various species of birds and butterflies thronging her garden, “I have kept earthen bowls and I fill them with fresh water and grains daily, so that they can feed themselves, especially during summer. I also have some bird houses in my garden.” She adds, “Environment conservation is a global issue and we can surely do our bit by adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle, educating ourselves and ensuring that we don’t waste natural resources that we get so easily in our comfortable city lives.”

Each small step counts

There can’t be many better ways to do your bit for the environment than adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle, isn’t it? That’s exactly what some of our D-Towners are doing. From ensuring minimum wastage of water and electricity to cycling for short distances, spreading awareness, using eco-friendly products, minimum use of plastic, recycling and reusing things, they are contributing effectively towards the environment. Says singer-actor Parth Oza, “As humans, we are privileged to have all these resources at our disposal and that’s why we should act more responsibly towards our surroundings. All creatures around us have the right to exist and we should create such an environment that they can co-exist with us.” Parth, who also feels strongly about water conservation, believes that our collective efforts can make a huge difference.

Actress-filmmaker Shital Shah, who takes care of a lush garden at her house, seconds him, “The least we can do is to not cut trees around us and make everything concrete just because it looks clean. Ahmedabad has had a rich history of creating spaces like chabutras that support and feed birds. But in our urban life, we seem to have forgotten that practice and it’s hurting our surroundings. Being responsible towards our environment is important, and we must take that responsibility seriously.”

So, from creating green spaces to minimizing waste, Dhollywood stars are doing their bit towards the environment. It’s about time more of us joined them!
